FAQ

How do I get a free site?

Click on this link (or the one on the home page) and follow the onscreen instructions. We recommend you call your site by your surname.

I’ve been given a site what now?

Well, you could check out what it looks like, but we would recommend clicking the link which says, “login”. This will get you into the backend and allow you to configure your site.

1. We recommend editing from the front end for ease of use so you should click ‘Settings > Front-end Editor’ and click the ‘Edit by paragraph’ check box, and ‘Save’.
2. Go to ‘Pages > Edit’ and click on ‘About’ when the page refreshes. Make this your first family member page. Make the title the name of the person and then fill in what you know about them. And ‘Save’.
3. Go to ‘Pages > Add’. This will create a new page. Again make the name the title, and fill in the content as needed. The only other element of this is to place the page in your family tree. On the righthandside of the page is a tabbed box called ‘Attributes’ and with in that a pop-up called ‘Parent’. Make the new page a child of the previous one, or if you want to, edit the first page and make that the child of this new one.
4. Have fun!

Why does it go yellow when I hover over page titles and content?

The yellow indicates areas which are editable from the front end. For example the title of the page or the content. But, you will only see the yellow when you are logged in, and only logged in users can edit your pages.

What is WordPress and where can I learn more about it?

Wordpress is the leading blogging software. We have used it for OIF because we feel it provides the most secure and flexible environment for families to publish details about their ancestors.
